It’s been awhile since I’ve done a blog, and with the end of the year just days away, now seemed like a good time. Like most people, I always look back and reflect on the year, and then look ahead at the year to come with hopes of good things.
You’ll hear the phrase ‘Happy New Year!’ uttered many times over the next few days, but does it mean hooray for the start of a new year, or is it a wish of happiness upon you in the upcoming year?
Happy is a matter of perspective for sure. When you’re young, happy is getting to play and having a bunch of toys. As you get a little older, happiness is about being popular among your peers. Then happiness is freedom, as you get your license or move out of your parents home. Eventually, happiness is finding a career, finding love, getting married, buying a home, building a family, etc. Then strangely enough, happiness is back to being able to play, and have a bunch of toys again (just bigger more expensive toys).
Each time I have levelled up, I was able to look back and see how much I had grown as a person, and it’s helped to keep ‘happy’ into perspective for me. And if you really want perspective, talk to someone whose time is near an end. They’ll tell you what happiness is really all about.
There are two phrases about life that have stuck with me… “no one has been on their deathbed wishing they spent more time at work” and “you can’t take it with you”. Translate those into meaning ‘find a good work/life balance’ and ‘in the end, it’s not the money that mattered’.
We never know how many new years we get, so as you think about how you want your 2024 to go, be sure to make the time in the new year for the things that you can’t put a price tag on… your loved ones, and yourself. Like Trooper said “… we’re here for a good time, not a long time”
From myself, and my wife Tara, we wish you all the best in 2024 and a very HAPPY new year!
