In 2005, photographer James Balog and his team were in Greenland capturing a time-lapse when a massive glacier broke off, causing a chunk of ice the size of Lower Manhattan to melt away and create huge swells in the ocean right in front of them. This event was considered an unprecedented geological catastrophe, and it is expected that similar events will occur in the future.
Balog was initially skeptical about global warming in the 1980s, believing that humans could not change the fundamental physics and chemistry of the planet. He thought that climate change advocates were diverting attention from the actual issues. However, after visiting Greenland and Antarctica and witnessing the damage firsthand, he became a believer in global warming. He now believes that more Arctic land has melted in the past 20 years than in the previous 10,000 years.
