Long before Environment Canada existed, Farmers have been predicting the winter by reading pig spleens from recently butchered pigs. I’m not qualified to say exactly how it’s done, it’s an art that is passed down through generations, but I think it has something to do with the length of the spleen and the fattiness of it. It’s been my experience over the years that it’s fairly accurate.
Our friend Wade Gilbertson of Parkside, SK has been reading pig spleens for years, and here’s his prediction…
The month of December starting on a warming trend, will carry on into the middle of the month, if not longer. With the above average temperature moisture will probably be rain more so than snow. Not expecting a lot but some moisture. At the end of the month temperatures will become more average, with little moisture.
The start of 2022. The new year will start out with average temperature, with little moisture. Then thing’s start to change. The rest of January will get back to normal or below normal temperatures with NO moisture. Good Ol’ Saskatchewan Weather as we know it (Fricken cold!!)
The month of February will be just like January weather, cold temperatures with a little snow, not much. As the end of February comes to a close it will warm up some.
As we head into March it will be average to above average temperatures with some moisture. It looks like March won’t be so bad after all.
April will have average temperatures with some moisture.
The Spleen was very long this year which indicates to me that the spring is going to be very cool again. But it did have some indication of some moisture, which will be a good thing going into next years growing season. Better than last year!!
