As a kid I started reading at an early age, and had a vocabulary that was ahead of someone my age. We took Hooked on Phonics in school, but I also remember being in Ms. Jones Grade 2 class struggling to spell the word glasses, because I just couldn’t wrap my head around the the plural.
Spelling and proper grammar were always taught to be a pretty big thing that you would need to know in later life. We were told that poor spelling and grammar usually indicated a lack of intelligence. To make a spelling mistake on a school assignment meant a lower mark. To make a spelling error on a resume or job application usually resulted in not getting the job… then texting and the internet came along and we’re back to spelling with hieroglyphics. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one that still tries.
Today is National Grammar Day, a day to observe and encourage the use of correct grammar in both verbal and written language. We’ll never fix it all in one day, so maybe if we work on just one thing today, the world will be a better place… Can we please stop saying “I seen that” or “I saw’d that”??? It’s supposed to be “I saw that” or “I have seen that”. I hear it daily, I read it online daily, and it makes me twitch. I hope it doesn’t get worser.
And to help folks out today, I’ve enlisted the help of Weird Al Yankovic…

🙂 I’m trying too, Lew! Like your advice to bad drivers, all the best with this!
