A sad sad day for everyone in Saskatchewan (and the rest of the world too) as one of the most beloved cookies of all time just somehow disappeared right under our noses.
Dad’s Cookies were once made in Regina and White City for decades and one of my favorites were the Goodie Rings. Ahhhh those delicious chocolate covered rings of peanut butter, oats and coconut. I’m not proud but there were times I powered through nearly and entire bag of them in one sitting. Sometimes I would bite them in half and hold them in my teeth like dentures and other times I would jam the whole thing in!
Well Dad’s is no longer making them for some reason….makes as much sense as when they dropped making the universally loved chocolate chip cookie back in 2017. Oh the humanity!!!
I have always loved Goodie Rings ever since I was old enough to eat cookies. My parents rarely bought them as with two boys, we would devour that bag in seconds like a tree trunk going through a woodchipper. My gramma on the farm however knew how to get the grand kids to come and visit….all the great cereal and Goodie Rings.
I remember growing up in Weyburn and our grade 4 class took a field trip to Regina to visit the museum, the Legislative Buildings AND a tour of the Dad’s Cookie plant complete with free samples and a take home BAG of whatever cookie we wanted! Of course I chose Goodie Rings and I ate the entire bag on the bus ride home!
The end of the Goodie Ring just sort of quietly happened. I don’t recall reading about it anywhere, and just sort of assumed grocery stores were out of them when I went to shop, or that perhaps Covid had slowed down shipments, but no, Goodie Rings were discontinued.
In 2012, Mondelez — one of the world’s largest snacks companies — took control of the Dad’s brand. However there is some hopeful news. According to them they say Goodie Rings are not discontinued, just put in a “non production state”.
I sure hope they bring them back as it’s hard to find foods that stick with us our entire lives, and for me Goodie Rings are one of those!
